Having a penile implant surgery is a decision that will affect a man for the rest of his life, says Dr. Paul Perito. Implant surgeries for the correction of erectile dysfunction have been around for over 30 years and the pre-and postop instructions remain relatively unchanged, and for good reason. According to Dr. Paul Perito, it’s vital that patients follow the instructions exactly as given to in order to have a successful procedure and an expedient recovery.
Preop
Patients will be given a surgical soap and a round of antibiotics, both which need be started the day before surgery. Dr. Paul Perito’s patients are also instructed not to consume any food or liquids, including water, after midnight the night prior to the procedure. Blood thinners, including aspirin, must not be taken in the seven-day period prior to surgery as bleeding can be an issue. The patient should have someone available to drive him home from the hospital.
Postop
Dr. Paul Perito reminds his patients that bruising and swelling is normal after surgery and should heal within two weeks. In the 48 hours immediately following the procedure, the patient should remain relaxed and ice the area. Very little activity should be performed during this time. For the two-week period after surgery the patient is not to lift any weight greater than 10 pounds, says Dr. Paul Perito.
Patients are allowed to bathe (shower) two days after surgery and a warm, soaking bath may be therapeutic after 72 hours, says Dr. Paul Perito. It is possible that during one of these first baths or showers the small strips over the incision will fall off. The absorbable stitches need no further care. It is advised to remove any bandages from the hospital.
Dr. Paul Perito and staff will supply a scrotal support that should be used to rest the penis against the abdomen for three days. After 72 hours postoperative, patients should massage the incision gently while carefully pulling down on the shaft of the penis, instructs Dr. Paul Perito. Pain is common following any surgery; a painkiller may be used for comfort as needed. Unless the patient is allergic to naproxen, Dr. Paul Perito recommends taking Aleve for pain. It is important to remember that painkillers can cause constipation; therefore, it’s vital to eat a balanced diet and stay hydrated during recovery. Patients can expect a normal sex life to resume between four and six weeks after the procedure.
Dr. Paul Perito reports that while the hydrophilic coating on the Titan implant has reduced the rate of infection to 1%, patient compliance with physician instructions is still paramount in achieving the best results possible. The time period immediately after surgery poses the greatest risk of infection.
